Very few things in life are actually necessary. To me they are a fun hobby and something I enjoy doing along w/ track, cheerleading and volleyball...none of those things is necessary either. It is another type of competition and I thrive on competition! That prize money and gorgeous crown are all bonuses!

Necessary to find out new faces for cosmetics market. and for Ad. gurus Fashion desgners and for TV and Film producers . For those Millonnaires who are in search of beautiful wife also this brings out prospective bride. And for Employment. Those ladies who are not employed with IT or engineering or medical profession will get job also . and to keep the whole industry of Event management going .
it is ony the beauty pageants that gave us aishwarya rai and sush and bips and many of past and many in future will come from this.
there may be some excesptions who are falling prey to Dance bars , and arabs ,or underworld but there also they earn a lot.

seeing the present trend of the companies producing beauty material, it has become necessary to go down the ramp to show/do publicity of those companies. ladies are generally vulnerable, so they for want of money or exposure have to enter the arena. there are motivators also from these companies or self made to fetch the women folk in those pageants. ultimately it has become trend and those who do not follow are named orthodox/ or not going with time. so a mental compulsion.

same thing wit cartoons
some ppl think they r useless while others think dat they r the best thing on tv!!!
so it depends how u look at it!!

I never understood that whole world. It seems degrading and unnecessary especially when the contestants are below the age of 13. I think it's kind of sick.
