Could be a damaged / corroded wire.

Do you have 2 brake lights, or one in the rear window too? If you have a rear window brake light, and it works, but the two brake lights on the back of the car don't, it could be your signal light/ brake light switch. It's just above the brake pedal, kind of up under the lower part of the dash. If that's not the case, it sounds like a short circuit. Use a circuit tester, have someone push the brake pedal, and check the sockets for the brake lights. If they're not working, it's a short, and you have to replace the sockets and wires. If they are, it's something else. In that case, I suggest having someone else steal your car, and collecting the insurance money for it, because mechanics won't even give you a quote on electrical work, since it could be any number of things. Good luck.

the brake light switch probably has went out on it ,that's what makes them work, its located on the brake pedal about half way up,it takes about 10 minutes to change out,and only cost around 5-10 bucks, any advance or auto zone should have one in stock for it but that's whats causing this to happen, good luck with it hope this helps.
