You should take them the whole time you are trying to conceive, you entire pregnancy, and the whole time you are breastfeeding. Your body needs extra nutrients for all those things. Whoever told you that probably meant that folic acid to prevent neural tube defects was most important the first five months. But you and baby still need nutrients after that!

I took my prenatal vitamins throughout my entire pregnancy and while I was breast feeding my son. I will do the same for this pregnancy. If you are still unsure of how long to take them, I'd talk to your doctor and see what s/he recommends.

Congratulations and good luck :)

You take prenatal vitamins during your entire pregnancy and for a couple of months afterwards until you run out. If you are breastfeeding, you just take them until you run out.

I suspect you misheard someone or they made a mistake. Some women start prenatals 3 months before pregnancy, but they are primarily for pregnancy.

Not true- you take them the entire pregnancy. They are only vitamins and they can't harm you, only benefit your baby. I'm 39 1/2 weeks and still taking them.

Actually, as long as your stomach can handle the iron in then, it's best to take them thoughout your entire pregnancy. Most doctors will recommend that you continue to take them while breast feeding as well, if that's how you intend to feed your baby. If nothing else, even after the baby's born it helps your hair and nails grow beautifully! =)

Take them for as long as you are pregnant and keep taking them while you are nursing. Actually anyone can take them; they are very good vitamins.
