When the car doesn't start, there is no crank. You turn the key, lights come on, the fuel pump engages, but no crank at all. Worse, the car runs great!!! And, when it doesn't start, it will eventually start....anywhere from 3 minutes to 3 hours later.

you need to go over all of the power connections to it ,and see if any of them are loose or corroded, this will cause a no start situation like your getting, and it will only do it occasionally ,one other thing that will cause this to is the neutral safety switch on the car,if its not all the way in park sometimes this will cause that to happen, the problem your having can sometimes be hard to locate, its usually not as hard to repair as it is to find though, good luck on it hope this helps.

Check the cable connecting to the battery, is one loose? I agree with Matt it could be with your ignition - but try just changing the $40 ignition coil housing. This is a notoriously bad part on the 2.3 I-4 engines that wears out after 60,000 miles - it looks like a plain old piece of plastic but it's prone to humidy and corrosion, and is probably not enjoying the summer much. Also check your alternator - with the belt off, it should spin easily by hand. Is the battery showing 12v while the car is running? Then change the alternator.

If you have the GM Passkey theft deterrent system, that could be the culprit. If your key has any dirt or moisture on it, the electronics can misread the chip in your key and shut down the ignition circuit altogether. If this happens, you'll see a security indicator in your dash. It automatically resets after a couple of minutes. Wipe off your key and try again.

If you don't have the Passkey system or if you don't see the security light, then it is most likely your neutral safety switch. The next time it doesn't start, try shifting it out of park and then back in to park a little more forcefully. If it starts then that's your problem.

What year is it? I also had a Pontiac Grand Am that had a similar problem mine was a 92. I finally traced the problem to the ignition control module. Mine had gotten moisture into its casing cause it to periodically short out. Does it normally happen after a rain storm, or a high humidity day? If so i would definitely have it tested.

when i had mine, their was a recall on the ignition switch. it started acting up until in burned up. make sure you have the old one out and a new one in. the same thing happened to me. go to a pontiac dealer and have them check to see if it was changed or not. they should take care of it for you.
