A feeling of investment - of time, emotional energy, and formation of future expectations together - on the relationship puts tension on it. This creates for you a dichotomy in the person for which you have an infatuation. At once you see the potential of having a great relationship and future with this person and, yet, if they are not quite meeting up to your expectations, they assume the role of the destroyer of your dreams. You see them as both the creator and potential destroyer of your happiness. So you both love and hate this person at the same time for in them you've relied upon your very happiness.

Yes but you hate the actions of the person, the way the treat you or someone or something else, their illegal actions like the use of drugs or criminal acts. But the love for that person is the underlying goodness that is seldom seen by others.

The trick is if you are looking for a last relationship, does the "hate" outweigh the "love?"

Some people say that love and hate are just different degrees of the same thing. I love my boyfriend but I sometimes feel like I really hate him when we are arguing. You can also love someone but hate who they've become, or hate things about them that they can't/won't change....it's complicated, as I'm sure you know since you're asking this question!

Yes, you can have different feelings about various aspects of his personality and his lifestyle.

For example, you may hate his demeanor when he is inebriated but love his dogged pursuit for a solution to a problem.
