After reading some comments by people on here saying they would not want their children to receive education in a foreign language, I have come to the conclusion our society is not divided by wealth, but by how they view the world.

On one side, there are people like myself who are open to innovation and believe things can be better. We are willing to adapt and realize "America" and the world will always change. We want our children to receive an education not just in our culture and its norms, but to have a good understanding of others. We are generally well educated and more nuanced when compared to the other "America."

The other side is driven by a fear of change. They believe nothing benefital can be learned from other societies. They fear anything that might be foreign. They oppose innovation because they might have to adapt. They are generally less educated and fear progress will hurt them.

Isn't this the fundamental division today in American society?

I totally agree with you. There are those two types of americans, but the group that is afraid of change is much larger than the other.

Wow, this is a GREAT question. This identifies part of the problem that we as an American society has. Well thought out.

It has occurred to me that as a nation, we are very young- a little over two hundred years old-by world standards. I think that one of the reasons that Europeans and other cultures are so distrustful and condescending seemingly to America, is that they are older. They have gone through long periods of history in which they have sought expansion of Empire and fought wars and sought to take land and other resources. And they have learned. We are young, and easily persuaded, because we have not apparently learned, from our brief history as of yet.Our foreign and economic policy is almost always fostered by greed and a disregard of the human family as a whole. We have not learned to play nice with others, is my point. We want to bully and extort.

Also, I think that the world and not just America is being divided into two economic classes, which John Edwards talks about. And it is a global problem that is perpetuated by multinational corporations and greed.

You are absolutely correct, of course. Education is the key to any success our society has in the future.

Isn't it sad that there is still so much racism, poverty, and hate?

Simple fact is the American worker can not compete with countries which have at best semi-slave labor.

Nor can the American worker compete when Corporations move their plants to those countries for cheap semi slave labor.

Yes a Global economy would work if it was on a level playing field.

But not with countries whose governments control the wages of their workers and offer no protection for their workers against the multi national Corporations. In fact a lot of times not even paying the workers.
Nor will it work where companies more over seas to get cheap child labor and often times the children are indentured laborers. And if you don't know it indentured laborer is little more than a euphemism for slave labor.

And yes there are two Americas now. Those who are profiting by the gutting of American industry in favor of cheap semi slave labor and out right slave labor. And those who are losing their jobs because of it.

But contrary to what the internationalist want you to believe America as a whole is being severely .damaged by it.

Think of a country as a large Corporation which has to make a profit are at least break even to stay in business. then think of our trade deficit and how much it is. Trade deficit is how much more America is having to spend on items it is importing to how much money it makes on items it sells overseas.
Right now America if you think of it as a corporation is losing money. In the long run America will suffer even more than it is suffering now because of it.
