In order to live in them successfully it doesn't matter if you are a big fish or a small one. You just have to be a smart fish.

I'd choose to be a small fish in a big pond because there's room for growth. I feel if I was a big fish in a small pond it would be less meaningful, not to mention the fewer opportunities.

Small fish in a big pond, less of a chance of being caught because there would be tons of other fish. But if you are talking in metaphors I would rather be a big guy in a small area.

Some already said my answer, but I would prefer to be a small fish in the big pond.
It would give me more room to grow and then become a big fish....and we need to continually grow....very good
