low fluid level would not let you have reverse and no forward, you may choose to change the filter and replace the fluid, but I doubt this will help. Take your dipstick out and smell the fluid thats present, next smell some new fluid. does the fluid from your dipstick smell"burnt" or very strong? it most likely will and this means you have lost your transmission to a mechanical failure and will likely need a new one, do not go with a junkyard tranny, you can order quality built, heavy duty trannies out of Jegs for a very reasonable price, and its usually cheaper than anyone local can rebuild for, and remember to always replace the torque converter when replacing a bad tranny

IT might b somebody put 2 much fluid in it & caused the fluid 2 airirate witch makes FOAM & smokes the tranny.Tranny's work best on fluid only-Same thing will happen 2 a motor if 2 much oil is put in. One last thing 2 try is put in one & a half pints of dot 3 brake fluid in the tranny, Run the engine for a half hour & if it hasn't started 2 move, turn it off & try it again the next day. The brake fluid will swell the seals up if there are ANY seals or o-rings left 2 swell. Saw one tranny last 4 ,6 months after the brake fluid treatment. Same as buying the transmission conditioner @ the store , butt better..

I hope you checked the fluid level before posting this so if it's still wont go forward your forward/reverse clutch pack is not engaging. since it works in reverse fine I would think it's in the valve body(VB), you have a sticky valve in your VB. time for a shift kit and rebuilt VB.

I don't recommend an amateur rebuild his own VB it's not a simple task. You can buy rebuilt VBs if you have a transmission parts house near you. Or on-line you probably can get one.

A trans shop will probably just try to sell you a complete rebuild, depending on the mileage a rebuild might be in order but get a shift kit put in either way.

My old company issued car was a 1992 Chevy blazer with 230,000 at retirement. It would not go into reverse. It was subject to all weather conditions and this was a 24 hour a day vehicle. It was mainted well but in the end, it would not go into reverse.
I wish I could b more helpful, but you may have the same time. Mine had to go for scrap.

I think you may need a new transmission. Our Chev truck had a similar problem, we had the forward gear but no reverse, needed a new transmission.
