I'm modifying a refrigerator to hold keg beer with a tap and a spout on the door. Would co2 keep it carbonated

Yes you will need a cylinder, a regulator etc. You can buy the whole kit on E-bay for around $165. Did the same thing about a year ago it's great

CO2 is normally used, but it is quickly being replaced by nitrogen. Nitrogen is said to reduce the hang over effects, and preserve the beer better.
