The entire society that was once known as "American" is deteriorating, not just the intellectual capacity of it's population. From the economic destruction of the industrial base due to the exportation of jobs instead of products that once supported the population to the massive influx of immigration diluting the aspects of custom used to define "American", it is all being destroyed. Aspects of global fascism have no political check, these people function for all intents and purposes without opposition. The greed of American industrialists attempting to cash in on Globalist interest in the destruction of "America" is the primary reason America has bums sleeping on park benchs outside the White House in Washington D.C. The problem is not limited to our Nation's capitol, it is accross the board in all American cities from coast to coast.
The answer is not in political rhetroic between the left and right, or the haves and have nots. It can only be addressed by a President who actually has the compassion and sense of civic responsibility of an FDR. Unfortuantely such decency and respect for our fellow man appears to be a thing of the past. At the risk of sounding completely negative, so long as the Federal government is a tool of corporate conglomertates (global or otherwise) the political entity once known as "the United States of America" will continue to deteriorate.
One Federal program is like one grain of sand on a beach that is covered by a huge oil spill of greed and bigotry. Attempting to limit the scope of the destruction by addressing one victim among millions is like tossing one starfish back into the ocean off endless miles of beach covered with dying starfish, but I guess you have to start somewhere, so "no child left behind" is as good a place as any.
All of those programs are used as fronts to justify expenduture of Federal tax dollars, so that the corporate elitists behind them can steal tax dollars. Sorry to shatter any illusions you might have had, but if you really want to understand just how much the "government" (local, State, or Federal) doesn't care about the populations they alledgedly "govern", look to New Orleans as the example. Tax dollars are still being stolen by corporate elitists, and had a fraction of the funds raised for relief actually been properly allocated, every one of the ten million plus people left homeless after those storms would have been millionaires.
The corruption is that bad. I wish I had an answer, but I don't, it is beyond me and I must leave it to God.

There is no doubt that schools have changed since I was in school. In my state they started the "school to work" program in which employers were asked what they needed and looked for in new employees.
I don't think the program is working since most students don't know how to count change back to a customer at WalMart, but I do not think that it is the school's fault.
Teachers teach the information needed to suceed in life but they can't make the students learn. The ultimate responsibility must fall on the students themselves.

yes it is extremely effective - that coupled with a consumer based society as opposed to quality of life society.
out sourcing is also very effective when it comes to the fear factor - so fear coupled with dumbing down is a dream come true for a oppressive society that can only find comfort spending money - debt+dumbing down+out sourcing - well actually it is all a product of dumbing down and has been in the works for some time now.

I think so.
Not too many Americans understand civics or the economy very well. It seems many of them simply parrot what they are taught to believe.
Which leads me to post a good question:
What is you're the definition of wealth?
