Most of the time with people new to computers, there are many unnecessary programs that load when Windows starts. These programs remain in memory and use up CPU cycles even when you aren't using them.

Here's a quick tutorial on how to find these programs:

Then, you must decide which startup programs are necessary and which aren't. If you don't know, then you can enter the names of the files into Google to see what programs they're associated with.

Of course, upgrading your RAM is always a cheap and simple method to make your computer run faster.

Free is the hard part--all you can do free is defrag and keep the C: drive clean--Download Ccleaner it makes cleaning your c drive faster and easier-I have it, and it works great. I clean mine about twice a day--you can do it less often, but the more often you clean it, the less time it takes(just a few seconds if you do it often like I do). 2 things not free that will help are, for $25 dollars you can buy online Auslogics Speedboost Its a program that optimizes the registry in your pc and makes it faster. Or put in more ram--ram isnt expensive if you find someone who knows how to do it--not hard really.

I don't know about the defraging thing... but I know that if my computer is running slowly, I can delete a lot of stuff, and it will make it run faster... maybe that would help???
