What is Family?

I hear a lot of bewildering and nonsensical descriptions what family is from homophobes. So I thought I'd ask this question in the LGBT section. What is Family?

Family is people you are with that love and care about your. Their affection isnt just skin deep. Their love is true. Family is not just blood.

Mom, Dad and kids--blood relatives-- is not nonsensical nor bewildering. Yes complete acceptance and support is important in everyone's life, but blood is a better safety net than other bodily fluids. Heterophobes have had to accept and rationalize that compromise by attempting to call the nuclear family bewildering and nonsensical.

Family to me is any group of people who commit to each other's well-being. I certainly think our society is limited in terms of gay vs straight, but I think it's limited in a lot of other ways, too. For example, the modern nuclear family is often defined as the married couple plus biological/adopted children. What about multiple generations? What about siblings who live together, platonic friends who are partners in every way except sexually, etc?

I never understood the "homophobes" term, when it's used to describe someone that doesn't agree with homosexuality. It has nothing to do with fear, just a beliefe.

My idea of a family is a strong connection between individuals that are stronger then anyting they have towards friends or other individuals. It's a sense that this person is more important then you and you would do anything for their happiness.

Family is blood, it's your tribe, your people who will stick by you to the end, and not judge you or hate you or out you behind your back, and you stick by them to the end no matter what, and you love them and they love you, and you'd do anything for them and they'd do anything for you. And they're the people who will hug you and not glare at you and mutter... disgusting! When you announce you can't go through life as a male anymore.
