we're told time and time again by the nanny state what is good for us and they always find a way to tax it. why has it not been made law for cyclelist to wear helmets even if it is for kids under a certain age.surely this would save live's .or is it because there's no money to be made from such a law?

i asked this question only because we had a freind of our 7 yr old daughter stay over and the friend didn't want to wear a helmet but we told him he had to if he wanted to go out for a bike ride. he did wear it and was quite happy with it.
our government is always making up or changing laws "for the good of the nation"ie stopping fast food ads for kid's stopping kingsized mars bars adding tax to this and that so we don't buy as much ie booze, fags . yet in one area where live's and serious injury could be saved i've not heard a thing.
i'm not in favour of a dictatorship but as we already seem to have one do feel that it should be law for kids at least under 10 to wear helmets.

Yes i do think it should be Law for all Children of school age and under to wear helmets. There is alot of traffic on the roads now ,,,,,far more than when i was a young girl.
I also think that we should have more cycle paths aswel for Cyclist's because i for one As a driver (i know shame on me) am often worried about passing them on the road as they seem to ride in the middle.I have no objections about riding a bike. But do it safely. If every body was to wear helmets then kids wouldn't think they looked stupid and A&E would probbly see a lot less serious head injurys

A bicycle is not motorized and children are more likely to fall off a bike than an adult. Most adult accidents are bicycle/car collisions or stationary object collisions (at least those requiring some kind of medical care). I think an adult can make that decision for themselves the same as an adult can make a decision as to whether to wear a helmet when horsebackriding, running, boating or skiing.

You need the money to enforce the law, and there simply aren't enough cops to bother with what is essentially an adult decision. Even with seatbelt laws, which are important, you are not ticketed unless you have been stopped for something else. I do not in any way support a LAW requiring bike helmets for adults. I think our lives are already sufficiently micromanaged.

particular, i've got faith so.( I grew up by no ability wearing a seat belt additionally, then whilst the guidelines got here out i began wearing it each and every of the time and nonetheless do to right this moment. It saved my existence.) A case-administration learn of the effectiveness of bicycle protection helmets Thompson RS, Rivara, Thompson DC. the hot England mag of drugs Vol 320:21 pp1361-7, 1989. A learn carried out at 5 hospitals in Seattle between December 1986 and December 1987 of cyclists admitted to an emergency room. Of 776 cyclists admitted, 269 had head injuries. 235 of those, and 433 of the 507 cyclists who have been admitted without head injuries, achieved a questionnaire. The learn concluded that cycle helmets decrease the possibility of head harm by ability of 80 5% and of suggestions harm by ability of 88%.

Interestingly at a time when increaded use of cycling for short journeys etc would be beneficial the experience of countries like Australia that have made it compulasary for cyclists to wear helmets was a dramatic reduction in the number of journeys by and use of the bicycle.

I always wear a helmet out of choice but I would prefer that the element of choice remains.

Yes there should be. I think in one of the channel island cyclists need to be insured and pay road tax. I think the monetary cost of hospital treatment and perhaps long term benefits necessitated by severe head injuries should be the consideration. There may not be money to be made but there is money, lives and chronic pain that can be saved.

I also think that guys should wear covers over the helmets of their other little cyclist, to stop the spread of Aids, other diseases and to prevent unwanted pregnancy's. This again saves money through unnecessary mishaps

Yes, it saves lives. I ride a motorbike and wouldn't dream of riding without a 'lid'; under any circumstances.

People assume because there is a difference between the speed at which a motorbike and a cycle travels, that the wearing of a helmet should be compulsory only for those travelling on motorbikes. Helmet-less cyclists never seem to consider the possibility that they may fall or be in an accident not caused by them, not matter how carefully they ride. Good thing we'll always have a need for donor organs.

It's just plain idiotic not to wear one. Sometimes the state needs to step in and put a stop to people needlessly killing themselves. How exactly is the government going to tax it? Personally I think everyone cretinous enough to not wear a helmet deserves to be fined - but a fine is not a tax.

And yes it should be the law to wear a cycle helmet too.

I agree, it should be a law, for just as driving a car is a privilege, not a right, riding a bicycle on the street is also a privilege.

I just find it extremely ironic that many states have passed laws allowing motorcyclists not to wear helmets, when there in much greater danger of dying from head injuries in an accident, but force people in cars, many of which have front- and side-impact air bags, to wear seat belts.

Although I strongly believe in wearing of helmets and I do wear mine when I ride a bicycle. I don't think that they should be mandatory. Same goes with seat belts in autos. It does not make you hazard on the roadway and do not endanger the general public. Again I think it is not wise not to wear these items but by the same token, it is my life and limb and I should be the judge as to wear it or not and not be dictated by anyone other than perhaps children from their guardians
