Mine would be Can.
They had such an influence on modern alternative music and barely anybody even knows who they are!

I love the German Krautrock! Neu! is a very underrated band as well Kraftwerk. Can influenced everyone including Wilco on Ghost is Born and P.I.L. with John Lydon.

Kenna or The Fall Of Troy. They're both awesome. Although, I get the feeling that after Live Earth's performance, Kenna's popularity is going to skyrocket.

Mott the Hoople. They did incredible covers of Reed and Bowie songs, but never really got a chance to get their feet wet in the music industry.

Can was tremendous. I'd have to say Wire, Television, and The Modern Lovers as well. All totally underappreciated by the general public for what they did.

Band of Susans. Just like Sonic Youth, except more guitar and little less artsy.
