Ok, I am in my 30's. My whole life I've loved swimming underwater. I could go under without holding my nose and swim and swim. Last few years, its like, I've "forgotton" how to do this. I go underwater, and blow air out of my nose, then freak out and start breathing in, and then head for the surface. This is not life and death, it's just weirding me out because I love to be underwater in the pool. Nothing severe ever happened, no tragedy or anything. Its like one day I just forgot how to do it and its been that way ever since. What's wrong with me?

I think this is something that happens to some people as we get older. I have the same thing and am in my mid-30's. I also have a lot of stress, am not in the same physical shape that I "used to" be and I worry more than I should. I think that, for me, it is partially the getting out of shape part. But I think it is mainly just the sense of anxiety and stress that I carry. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a freakin' basketcase, but I have responsibilities and a less-than-carefree life. Could it be that you are the same? That you are not able to "let go" while you are underwater anymore? That maybe you have a general anxiety that will not let you relax while you are underwater? Not that you are afraid of drowning or anything extreme like that ... just a general sense of loss of control or generalized fear of what would happen if you relax??

I don't know ... I hope this helps ...

When this first happened, had you not been swimming in a while? Most likely it happened that one time on accident and now you keep worrying yourself that it will happen again to the point where you actually do it again. Maybe try one of those nose plugs until you are comfortable again. Or try just swimming under water for short periods of time to trick your brain into thinking that you’re retraining it to swim under water; the mind is a tricky thing. Good luck.

The same exact thing happened to me! I didn't swim a lot for a couple of years but when i did, it seemed like I somehow forgot or something. It probably just means your not exactly used to it. Practice and swim under water and you'll get used to it. If it helps, you can use goggles, they really help! And soon, you won't need them anymore.

I don't know that's weird. Try to remember how to hold your breath I guess, did you used to wear goggles or open your eyes underwater and not now or something?

One of the cardinal principles in life is that that what you don't use you lose. This applies to skills also. Don't worry. As you return to regular practice, your skill will return and improve. Stop worrying because that tends to block the recall process.

Do you have enough air in your lungs now? You definitely have more on your mind now than you did when you were young. I believe that you've convinced yourself that you can't do it anymore. Stinkin' thinkin' will stop you every time.
