Take your most treasured items. Everthing else is available in India if you have the money.
Leave behind the attitude though.

Just vaccinate yourself.
1. Carry a digital camera.
2. Your laptop.
3. Lots of money. (Indian economy has grown a lot and you won't get much foreign exchange for your dollars)
Everything is available here that too cheap.
Enjoy shopping.
When in India drink lots of water. That shall help you cope with weather here.
WARNING - Mumbai is a coastal city and damn humid. Presently there are lots of lots of rain here.
You are likely to find 2 faces of this city one which is tech-savvy and ultra rich and other very poor and unhygienic.
Mind it don't dare to travel by the suburban trains. They are crowded as hell and you as a American will surely not cope up with it. Take a taxi. They are bit expensive but now luxurious.
Anyway dear, do enjoy your stay here

I just came back in mid-June after 1 month in India. It was HOOOTT!! I went during the peak of summer and it was always around 110-115F. The monsoon season already started so I think it's raining quite a bit there. Unless you've been to developing countries in the past, you will be in for a shocker like I was. It's very dirty there with garbage everywhere and no toilet paper in the bathrooms. Public toilets are squat toilets, and traffic is crazy! You have to run for your life if you want to cross the street in some places in India (i.e. Chennai). Anyway, I can talk forever, but I suggest you bring: mosquito repellent, a calculator (to barter more easily), sunscreen, sunglasses, conservative summer clothing, lots of toilet paper and sanitary supplies/anti-bacterial, soap, and a small battery-powered fan with a water spray. Also, be prepared for their confusing head bobble...you will know what I mean when you get there. You will realize you took life in the US for granted. Have fun!
P.S. Your experience may be different from mine depending on where you're moving to. It's cleaner in the north.

You do not get all the things you get in USA. Pure air,Potable water and honesty in day to day life are totally absent in India. Be prepared to get cheated in all walks of life. Do not go to any Government offices thinking that things will be done automatically.Suffer in silence.
