If you discover a way to generate energy from nothing (which violates the laws of physics, and is therefore impossible), you would solve all energy problems. With an arbitrary amount of energy available, we could do anything we wanted, including interstellar travel, terraforming other worlds, even building and destroying stars.

The most significant impact would not be from the energy production standpoint at all, but from the demonstration that magic does indeed exist. Using the same principles as the magic box, one could perform all sorts of feats of magic. One could make a magic cornucopia that delivers an endless supply of food to end hunger. Magic carpets would end traffic jams. A whole industry would be created employing professional witches and wizards to come up with new applications. The possibilities are endless. For the time being, though, it appears that we are stuck with those inconvenient laws of physics that prohibit such things.

You would most likely be killed by the oil industry for ruining them. Your idea would never see the light of day. The amount of people out of work would be staggering and topple mankinds ability to function with one another. You would essentially be destroying us all!
