Tolstoy's "War And Peace"?
I can't make up my mind to read it or not. 1400 pages (the beautiful Folio edition). The alternative is Rutherfurd's "The Forest". If you've read any of these books, please give me your opinion.

Reading War and Peace is a must for any literature student. Like Crime and Punishment, A Tale of Two Cities and the Grapes of Wraith it may not be the easiest read but it is a necessary read

I have read 'War and Peace' and enjoyed it. I found it to be a fairly easy book to read despite the length, as the strong characterisation and psychological insight displayed keeps it interesting. Most commentators seem to find Andrei the more interesting of the two main characters, although I found him to be a somewhat cliched man of action at times, whereas Pierre's progress from clueless young nobleman to mature adult was much more interesting. There is a strong storyline all the way through, with none of the meandering which can afflict other lengthy classics (Les Miserables springs to mind here...).

If the length of WaP puts you off, you may want to try 'Anna Karenina' instead. It's only about half as long, but is if anything the superior novel. However, WaP gives you more bragging rights!

War and Peace is a very good book if you can get over the names. There are loads of characters and all the names are Russian so you can't even pronounce them. I ended up making up silly names for them just so i could follow the plot. But if that's not a problem for you then the story is excellent.. Never read The Forest.

I read it when I was 12 years old (My favourite film was 'My Girl' and the lead character said she had read it "for fun" so I decided I would too, proof that kiddies ARE influenced by films).
I don't recall any of it apart from that it seemed like a huge chore. I just wanted to tell people I'd read it without having to resort to lying.
Maybe one day I'll try again and actually pay attention.

Read it in high school cos it was the fattest book in the library, but don't remember much about it. Give Enyd Blyton a go.Much easier too read and brings back so many childhood memories!
