There's a battle scene in the film,The Caine Mutiny, where all of crewman are ordered to put on white face cream.

The only thing I could speculate is that it's a crude type of sunscreen.

Does anyone know what this cream was, and what purpose it was supposed to serve?

Anti-flash cream, supposedly to protect yourself from munitions flashes.

Anti-Flash Cream was zinc oxide cream that was used to supposedly protect the skin of the face from flash burns from explosive bursts during ordinance firing in combat situations. In the forties, they worked with what they had, for the reasons they knew of.
It's about the same zinc oxide ointment or cream that's available today for extended exposure to the sun.
