Ofcourse we all "put foot in mouth" at times, but what about some who almost always have to give unkind comments. I am talking about those in your daily life. Do you know of any who are this way and what would you say to them to help them see they can turn a negative remark into a positive.

667: I appreciate your opinion. I spend only a few hours a week on Yahoo but hear negative put down remarks on almost a daily basis and those are usually directed toward others. Why so negative and unkind and what to say to the them.

The exact comment are not always true to the feelings this person projects. There might be an underlying cause for this, like insecurity, unresolved forgiveness, unfulfillment, a need for love and acceptance, depression, and not having God in their lives.
If this person is close to you, treat the illess and not the symptoms.
I try (and not always succeed) to contradict them with kindness and tell them the other persons viewpoint.
This works just as great when you are alone or in a group, especially when the victim of his cruelty is part of the conversation.
Act the mediator.

Hmmm ... well, no I don't agree. I think you need to find the "right way" to say some things without being negative all the time.
I also believe that people who almost always are negative and make unkind comments are unhappy in their life and this is a way of releasing some of that unhappiness. Do they realize how you feel about their negativity? Don't be afraid to tell them how it makes you feel. It could be they just don't realize how bad they sound and need someone (like yourself) to bring it to light.
If subtle hints don't get the point across try saying this:
Now think of something positive to say! I would think that person will eventually get tired of you saying it and change their remarks. If not, try not hanging with them for awhile.
Good Luck ! I know how annoying a person can be to be around who acts like that ..... it's just sad to think someone would choose to go thru life like that!

Sometimes people need to have something rude said to them, lest they forget that they too are human!!!
As for people who use negativity and hateful speech constantly, realize that this is a form of addiction, and just like any other addict, the person needs practice being positive and recognizing the good in others.
Be a "reality check" for this person:
When she calls a stranger a slut, remind her that she has a shirt almost exactly like that one.
When he picks a fight with a bad driver, remind him that he cut someone off a coupla streets back.
It can be a very hard on someone to be around such a person (just ask my husband!!), but if you use love and patience (and a little cold truth every now and then), your friend will come around.
But the person will only change if she/he wants to change -
you can't force that on someone.
Good luck
and stay happy!!!

The world is not a "nice" place It's sometimes necessary to criticize and this can be mistaken for unkindness. But if a particular person is "almost always" negative, then you can help them by teaching them to look for something positive in the statement such as : "I can see your point, but....." There are ways of criticizing that are helpful and other ways that just put people down to make the speaker feel superior.

I vehemently disagree! I prefer not to be one of the "sheep" that blindly follow the flock. I like to ask questions and at times stir up the bucket a little. Life without some dissenting opinions would be like living in a box. You can live in a box if you like, but I prefer to live elsewhere. Thank you for allowing my opinion on the answers forum.

Well, within the constraints of diplomacy we need to speak out when we see illegal, inappropriate, or incompetent behavior. At the same time we need to avoid hostility and confrontational behavior. If you see something wrong -- say something, if it offends or angers the person so be it - just next time try to be a bit more diplomatic to try to create the desired effect. I have a tough time when parents let their kids run rampant while shopping and it is difficult for me to say anything without losing my temper - so I don't say anything at all but I should.

If you take the guy who keeps asking about the age of consent because he wants to sleep with little girls, then I disagree. He's a waste of space on the planet and so are all the other disgusting old men who think it's okay to touch children, and I'm going to let them know I think so. I don't care about being nice when it comes to that. However if it's like, me not liking someone's outfit, I'm not going to say anything to them about it.

Why say mean things when you can just as easily make someone feel good by saying something nice. Ofcource if there is a reason for saying something mean if it is true and the person needs to hear it . Go 4 it

A number of people on the shallow end of the gene pool think being rude is a form of assertiveness and dominance.
I enjoy countering with "I'll take that as the complement you were unable to phrase properly".
