There is some question of what kind of deal the Pope made with Mussolini. Considering the fact that the Vatican is surrounded by the Capital of Italy one would think just for the sake of preservation the Pope would, at least, give the appearance of getting along with the Fascists. In reality the church did much to save Jews and others from the holocost and the peril of the Nazis and Fascists at the time.

If he outwardly bucked the Facist regime there would have been an occupation of the Vatican and possibly death for all of the Catholic church leadership in Vatican City. Given the same circumstances I believe most people would have done the same thing.

No.

Fascism is a system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

Catholicism has always taught the government leaders are not a law unto themselves (like dictators) but that they are subject to God's eternal moral law and are obliged to respect the fundamental rights of the human person.

The Catholic Church has had to exist under every type of government used for the past 2,000 years from the Caesars of Rome to Soviet Communism and has outlasted them all (so far).

I am interested to know how you measure the fascist leanings of over 1 billion Catholics scattered throughout every country of the world?

With love in Christ.

A man doesn't represent the true sentiment of the Chuch. The Popes of before and today have made mistakes. We are putting too much emphasis on men, I admit that is party the Church's fault. I don't think the Church fits with fascism

so just because they are catholics, they are not entitled to an opinion or political belief? and don't forget, if Hitler, and Mussolini had been upset by the pope, the catholic church was and is very wealthy, what do you think would have happened to all that wealth, i think the pope at the time made a decision based on economic sense.

Wow. That's a bloody big brush you're using. And a hell of a lot of tar. Have you got a supply of feathers yet or are you just leaving it as tarring them all with the same brush?

That was sixty years ago, and I'll bet if you'd been in occupied Europe at that time you'd have made deals to stay alive.

I can tell you the Nazis and the fascists before Mussolini would agree with your statements. And that should be enough to give you some pause.

They only appear to fit nicely because you have chosen to equate political ideology with religious ideology.

The political ideologies of true fascism and true communism are anti-religious - precisely because such extreme political beliefs are contrary to Catholic beliefs.

As it so happens, Catholics do tend to be more conservative than liberal -but merely being conservative does not warrant the labal of fascism.

If most people are anything, it's that they allow their political leanings to dictate their religion. We are supposed to do the opposite: allow our religious values influence our politics.
