Hello. I have an old air conditoiner. It works great when it's on. Cools down almost the whole house to the point where you can where pants on a hot and humid day. Problem is, when we shut it off manually the fan still runs, we have to unplug it to get it to shut off completly. Then in order to turn it back on, we have to go flip the switch in the fuse box ???? We would like to use it this summer as it's getting pretty hot and our 3 year old has asthma but I do not know how it's acting is a dangerous problem or just something minor that we can deal with or fix. Thanks.

Is this a window unit, or a central air conditioner? If it is a window unit, it would cost more to repair than replace. If it is a central unit and still cools the home, call in a professional heating/cooling repair company.

Breakers in fuse boxes get weak over time and need to be replaced.

I had a similar problem with my AC and the repair man told me that when an ac turns on it pulls more power then it takes to keep it running for a short period of time. Every time It kicked on it was tripping the breaker because the breaker was wearing out. It still worked but had lost it's ability to handle the powerload the ac needed to start.

What he did was put in a new breaker and we have not had that problem since. Make sure you have nothing else connected to that breaker it's not safe and it would be drawing from it at the same time causing it to trip when the ac kicks on.

With respect to having to unplug it to stop the fan it is probably due to it's age, there is no reason you can't leave the fan on if it's wiring is safe and to code, it will only move the air around, but if it's not safe wiring and doesn't have a ground on it then you need to look into getting a new ac. The money you save on the newer more efficient models will more then pay for the cost of the ac over time. They use less power and the wiring will be safer.

If it has a fan switch make sure that it is on Auto and not Run. Silly answer but i have seen it happen.
