well i have put my female yellow gourami and my male blue gourami into a 5gallon tank to breed. i have provided hiding places and floating plants for the bubble nest. the pair have been in the tank for a few days now and there is no sign of a bubble nest. the male is constantly chasing the female and has wounded her and nipped her finns and she rests in the bottom corner of the tank but she doesnt seem stressed at all! i was wondering if this was normal behavier and how long should it be before they spawn a nest?
i just cant find my answer on the internet and i have looked! :P

yes yellow and blue will breed together... they are just both a different colour morph of the original "three spot gourami" .
if i just leave them in the tank together and feed them will they still eventually breed or do they have to be seperated?

Breeding three spot gourami is much like breeding bettas only on a larger scale. A few things come to mind that could be causing your troubles.

The tank is quite small for a breeding pair of 3 spots. they really need at least a 10 gallon and 20 would be even better.

While blues and golds are the same species and can and do breed together, it's harder to get a successful breeding out of a mixed pair. The theory is that the colors through them off.
It's entirely common for them to breed with only a very small bubble nest. You can try a styrofoam cup cut in half top to bottom to make a floating nest protector and see if that helps.

The female may not seem stressed, but the fact that she is hiding in the bottom of the tank is an indicator that she is in fact stressed and that he is bullying her. While this is normal to a certain extent, if she were ready to breed she would be trying to get to the nest site (bubbles or not) and he would allow her to if both were ready and willing.

My suggestion would be first to separate them for a week or more and condition them on a wide variety of foods to help get them in top notch breeding condition. Then if at all possible, put them together in a larger tank. If it still fails, you may need to replace one of them and get a matched color pair to work with.

Hope that helps

I'm not an expert on gouramis, but this behavior isn't unusual for breeding pairs. It sounds like they're not ready. Separate them again.

First, start the conditioning. Feed generously (some live foods if possible). Then the male will build the nest when he is ready.

The female will start to bulge when she is full of eggs.

Bring the temperature to 80 or 82 degrees.

When she is ready, put her back in his tank. If nothing happens within a day or so. Repeat the conditioning (generous feeding).

One more thing. I'm not sure a blue male will mate with a yellow female (are they the same species?)
