A typical party balloon full of helium gas can rise up to 20,000 feet, so long as the helium isn't leaking out. As the balloon rises it expands because the air pressure decreases with altitude. The balloon will eventually burst after the latex material is stretched beyond its limit. There is a more thorough explanation below:

because of the fact the helium is a techniques much less dense than air, the balloon will upward push. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, as you upward push, air rigidity decreases, and finally the rigidity of the helium of the balloon might equivalent that of the air around it, at which era it would supply up shifting. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, helium baloons have an inclination to leak, and that's a techniques greater probably that it would fall bypass into opposite to earth from the load of the balloon fabric itself, somewhat than being destroyed a technique or the different.

They rise up to a point, but not indefinitely: at some point, even further reduction of the external pressure will not increase the volume, so the buoyancy will be insufficient to further rise.

Eventually, the helium leaks out through the rubber, and the balloon sags and starts to shrink and sink.

Eventually, it lands somewhere.

Unfortunately, if "somewhere" is in the ocean, there's a good chance that some sea critter will try to eat it, will be unsuccessful at digesting it, and will starve to death as it blocks off its digestive system.

(Well, you wanted to know!)

My grandmother once told me as a child when I lost a baloon that it went to heaven so a child there could play with it.

My teacher once told me to never let go of a balloon. I live near the ocean. My teacher said balloons that are let go fall to the ocean and sea life eats it, chokes, and dies because of it. I remember he said every year, dead whales are dissected and a surprising number of them had balloons inside them. But, i suppose different things happen to balloons, depending on where you let them go and such.

well it should fall to the ground, its called gravity. If the balloon is filled with helium then it will rise until the aliens circling the planet see it and capture it for research.

They float up and away since they're filled with helium. Eventually they pop.

They may lose the gas and fall down, they may burst, they may drift and land somewhere else...
