My oven is fairly new. Yesterday I noticed that distinctive aroma of frying electonics along with my nuked dinner. It began to come on and then go off after a couple of seconds, but when I unplugged it and then plugged it back in - would work for one use. Then go back to shutting down. I'm thinking that with labor costs as they are and no idea what is wrong, It may be financially better to just go get a new one. But I hate throwing usable stuff away, too! Do you think it could be a simple fix or do I need to go get the new one?

You said your oven is fairly new and sometimes there is a guarantee on that oven for 6 months to 1 year. If you still have the guarantee, you might be able to have it replaced for free. You may also need the receipt if you still have it. If you do not have either of the above, I would just get a new one. Do not get the brand name that you have now. Get a good brand name and make sure you have a 1 year guarantee and please keep the receipt just in case it gives you problems. You should not be having this problem as the product is fairly new. Prices have come down on microwaves and I am sure you can find a good one at a reasonable price. Look at Wal-Mart, Target and K-mart. Good Luck!!!

Our over the range Litton microwave oven is still going strong after 27 years of service. The only thing that went wrong with it was a fuse that finally blew out and I replaced 2 years ago. However, if your magnetron is truly the problem, that may indicate a design problem peculiar to your microwave. I guess if your not going to tinker with it yourself to save the service call, I'd bite the bullet and get a new one if you think the magnetron went out again.

Like you, I hate throwing away stuff that still has a use. But it would probably be cheaper to get a new microwave than to repair the old one. Meanwhile, I strongly suggest that you not use the old one again: That's about what the last microwave I used did, and it nearly took out the rest of the house current too.

My panasonic microwave oven is relatively new the dial to set how long time needed to heat doesn't catch. Must turn dial a few times before to get 60 sec. Can dial be changed? Other wise everything works fine

6 great answers. but none of them have a nice blue hat. If its a counter top, it definately is not worth fixing and if it is a built
in job, I would just buy a counter top one and let the other one go.

Why don't you find out how much a new one is and how much it would cost to fix the old one. Or is money no object?
