Several Southern states tried to secede from the Union. Lincoln felt that "United we stand; divided we fall." He feared the collapse of the country and its being potential prey to foreign powers if the country were divided. So, the Southerns fired on Fort Sumter, and the Civil War began,

Actually the Southerners attacked first, Lincoln just retaliated.
