Why do people say "for all intensive purposes"? I have seen this in print and have heard it on TV (usually from someone being interviewed). Do they realize that they sound incredibly stupid?

For those who are oblivious to the point of my question, the phrase is supposed to be, "for all intents and purposes." I'm asking why people are stupid and use/say it as "intensive purposes". I don't need to be corrected.

Yes, I agree it sounds stupid, and the people that say it I believe simply don't know the correct terminology. To me it ranks right up there with, "it a feudal war"---instead of "futile"
"libary" not "library", "irregardless", "the road was curtained off"---instead of "cordoned". Our English language has become incredibly sloppy, and unfortunately you can see it
in the youth of todays speech, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. But really how can we blame them when they are taught phoentically how to spell and nobody says the word to them correctly in the first place!!!
So, actually not only does it sound stupid, it really is quite sad!

Actually it's not "intensive purposes" though it very well could have been mistranslated or misunderstood by some auditorily. This is a common problem. It's actually for all intents and purposes: meaning for goals and ideals to sometimes counteract or contradict the reality of a certain situation. Hope this clarifies your question..

Be careful....maybe it is/was a slip of the tongue, so to speak.
Intents is easily slurred into the word intensive..........everyone makes mistakes in the world..........and so do you.
