So it's an Athlon 2400+
At the moment, there is 2x256 DDR ram stick at 333Mhz.
Would i experience an increase in performance if i add 1 more stick of 512 DDR ram at 266 Mhz?
On a side note, there are only 3 ram slots on the motherboard.

Adding lower speed RAM ( of speed lower than that of the one you have in your system) will only make it run at the lowest speed of the RAM Sticks combined. Perhaps you should add a higher Speed RAM of same size ( 512 DDR RAM @ 333 Mhz ).
Even so there will be some little difference because now the PC will have more RAM which could be used to run more programs at a time. You will see the programs load a little quicker, Web pages will also load faster, Windows will open speedily etc.
If you use dual header Graphic adapter then the two displays you connect will be easier to use and perhaps provide better resolution etc.

It probably depends on your motherboard to be honest.
My last pc would "dumb down" all of the RAM to the lowest Mhz that was installed. Eg: I had 1 512 @ 266mhz, and added 512 @ 333mhz, it all ran at 266mhz.

This is not an absolute, but in most cases your ram will slow down to match the slowest stick that you have installed. I.E. your system would probably run at 266 megs/sec.

You will actually see a large performance increase. While your RAM speeds will not be as high, you will have double the storage. You will notice that it will be easier to multi-task.

No, the motherboard will down-shift to 266 MHZ and probably run slower than before.
