3/3 = £8.10
3/3 - 1/3 =2/3
2/3 * £8.10 = £5.40 Ans.
Or
3/3 = £8.10
1/3 * £8.10 = £2.70
£8.10 - £2.70 = £5.40 Ans.

1/3 rd of 8.10 is 2.70 and this is how we get it.
First, write it as 810 (keep the decimal point out).
810 divided by 3 is 270.
Now subtract it from 810. We get 540.
Replace the decimal. We get 5.40 pounds.

I'm not really good at math, so when I'm trying to figure out what 1/3 off is, I divide first by ten; i.e.:
8.10 divided by ten percent equals 80 cents. Eight times three is 24, add the zero, makes 2.40. 8.10 minus 2.40 (thereabouts) is 5.60 (thereabouts) and that's how I come up with a general cost of what it will be at the register. I've never been unpleasantly surprised by this system; it works for me.
