i keep my laptop on a flat surface &its generally okay with staying cool and everything, apart from when i play DVD's on it, then it gets quite hot from the bottom even when the fans working well, so i was wondering if a laptop cooler would help.
and could you recommend a specific one, i use an acer aspire 300.

Not sure what type of laptop cooler you mean do you mean one that sits on your lap because my understanding is it protects the user especially Male fertility from the heat generated by the laptop as to how well its is working the wife not pregnant since I bought my laptop I am sixty + years old
I have an aunt who is 9months older than me & my sister is 9 months older than my son so I am a little concerned it case it doesn't.
I found that if you remove the battery & run it off the mains whist playing CD's at home it does not get quite so hot.

Yes!, I have two coolers, one has adjustable fan speed and I do not remember brand( will have to look it's at my work), the other is one speed the brand is Targus. Both have dual fans, purchased at Fry's Electronics. The one at my work sets on my desk, the one I use at home is always on my lap/knee's, they get very warm/hot. The life of any electronics including a computer is keeping operating heat down.
Hope this helps

"do laptop coolers really work?" Yes, some better than others.

Extra heat is very common when playing DVDs. It shouldn't harm your laptop.

Do your homework before you buy, but I wouldn't waste my money.
