A few years ago a very cute kitty came into our yard. She seemed tame and let me pet her she even purred. All of a sudden she bit me that is when I noticed she had a huge wound on her tummy. Called the vet said to qurantee her, she then threw up & died. Took her to be tested for rabies thank goodness she didn't have it but I was so scared! I learned my lesson about petting strange animals.

Oh yeah. A few years ago I was staying at my mom's house. I was having this dream where my arm got caught on a blackberry briar. I woke up a little, but instantly fell back asleep. Then it happened again. I looked over at my arm and there was this huge rat (Norway rat, I believe) that had bit my arm TWICE. It scampered off the foot of my bed and disappeared. My mom refused to believe me until I cornered it behind the entertainment center.

We've kept domestic rats since I was about 8 years old. The wild one had come through an open window near our rat's cage. After I live trapped the wild rat, I could see that our pet rat had mauled the hell out of the his tail in defense of her home. PET RATS FTW!

The doctor said it probably didn't carry rabies, that raccoons were the main threat for rabies in our area. Thank God, because I was pregnant at the time!

I have never had a close call but I know 3 people that indeed had to have the shots.
A lady I worked with 3 little kids were outside and found a dead bat. They thought it was neat and brought it up to the porch to show her.She called the Dr. and ended up having the bat tested for rabies with a positive result. All three kids had to have the series of shots in the abdoman...I would have died.

I had the pre-exposure because I had a high risk of exposure job. No worse than a flu shot. Several of my coworkers had the post exposure when we had a positive rabies suspect (I was so lucky as to be off that day). This has been improved in recient years and can now be given in the shoulder like a flu shot. One person has mild flu-like symptoms -- for the rest the worst part was the paperwork.
