There was never any definite plans to invade the US. They had hoped to hit Pearl Harbor so hard that it would force the US to stay out of the war in the Pacific. At the least they intended for it to be a crippling blow, that would take so long to recover from that the US would not be able to fight until after it was too late to stop the Japanese.

The attack in the Aleutians was a diversion, intended to draw the Pacific fleet north so it could be ambushed when it was sent to defend Midway. But the US Navy knew of this plan, and lay in wait and ambushed the Japanese instead.

Japan was pretty well occupied just trying to take China, keep the Pacific islands, keep Manchuria, keep Korea, and keep Malaya.

They knew from the beginning it had to be a quick victory, or they'd run out of fuel.

Invasion of the US mainland was never in the cards, and they knew it. That's also why they didn't try to occupy Hawaii, once they'd seen what a shocking victory they had there.

Throughout the war they kept the Kwantung army, the best they had, in Manchuria. They believed there was a danger the USSR would declare war and make a beeline for Tokyo.

Yes, even before attacking Pearl Harbor, they considered California. They hoped, which had as much chance as winning the lottery, that the United States would easily roll over after Pearl Harbor. To the contrary, they awakened a "sleeping giant."

Japan's initial goal was to expand their territory and gain natural resources that they lacked in their own country. Having succeeded to a very large degree it would be foolish for them to have desired to enter a war with the United States. Yet the American government, through a series of measures [embargo's, trade restrictions, etc] forced the Japanese government into initiating an attack on the United States. It was a desperate hope for Japan that they might smash the American fleet in one quick blow. What they did not anticipate was that once attacked, the peoples of the United States would enter into a war that had been up to that point a very publicly unpopular idea. It seems that the politicians in the United States government managed to finally get into the war, as they had wanted, without having to deal with unpleasant things like blame.

curious note 1 - one can draw structural or methodical similarities in the current 'war' in Iraq. Yet in this case it was the news media conglomerates who wanted this war. It was their ceaseless harping on word association, [Saddam meant terror, Saddam meant 'weapons' of mass destruction', Saddam meant.... (oh yeah, Osama)] that convinced both our congress and the general population that we needed to go over there. But no one seems to remember that, odd isn't it?

I assume you're talking of the U.S. mainland. I believe that a full invasion of the west coast of the United States was a possibility if the U.S. Navy had been defeated at Midway.

They did not intend that America would engage in a fully fledged war after Pearl Harbour. They thought wrong, though, didn't they?
