so I paid for her gas and she wrote me a check which bounced. I sent a nice note and asked for another check. This was a month ago and no reply. What would you do? I was just trying to help her out and I do feel badly if she's fallen on hard times, but c'mon!

I mean we are not talking about much money here and obviously this acquaintance lacks good character. Drop her like a hot potato and write it off to experience.

An acquaintance?, I take it she is NOT a friend. I would call her direct and ask her outright what's going on?But under NO circunstances don't give her back the bounced check until she has given you either cash or a bank check. NO MORE personal checks. CASH ONLY. If she avoids you, then make sure to tell EVERYONE that she knows NOT to take any checks from her as she bounces them. Then tell her again she has like one week to square up with you or you'll have to take legal action. If she does not then take her to court and charge her. Just to cover your backside I'd make a police report immediately. Let them know you're doing this as it was suggested to you and that if she doesn't square up you'll be filing charges in court hence the need for the police report. Good Luck.

If you can swallow the loss, maybe do that but don't lend her money again. People do go through hard times sometimes and she's probably very embarassed. I've had similar situations and I just swallowed the loss. Maybe ask her for the money again in a short while or if you really need it maybe she can pay it up slowly. (I'm assuming a tank of gas is around $50-$65.) Money is just that...money. People's feelings are so much more important than money.

It's time to let the ***** in you come out. You tried to help her out of a embarrassing situation. She has taken advantage of your good nature and friendship. Take this as a lesson to never come to her financial aid again. You need to call and let her know exactly how you feel. Tell her unless you get your money back asap the friendship is null and void. I wouldn't beat around the bush. Take control of the situation.

She should acknowledge the fact that she owes you for the gas, And let you know she is having money problems. It might also help if you told her she could make small payments until she gets it paid..

talk to her.. don't get mad just talk to her tell her she can pay you back with small payments or if she a good cook have her come over and make some dinner that you can freeze.. or if you have kids have her babysit.. work it out make her a friend not a acquaintance.. it a tank of gas not you rent money

Well, you shouldn't have made the offer...If she needed it then, she probably still needs it now...She was either sincerely short in the checking account, or playin you for the money...Neither is good, but the question is whether she is poor or whether she is a manipulater...Given that her credit card was declined AND the check bounced, she is probably not as financially secure as you think...

Try contacting her again and ask for an explaination. If there's still no reply, give up and don't bother maintaining your relationship, - no matter how casual - seeing as she will feel that she can treat you as a patsy over and over again.

depends if you wanna keep your friend, i'd let it go awhile, she knows she owes it to you, if you learn of her getting some $$ remind her, or if your out sometime, pull up to the tanks and say something like you can repay me now if u can.
if u badger her, you will look like a peice of chit...so just be tactful...good luck, hope you get repaid for your niceness

I understand your problem..it also happen to me.....It was my cousin he was driving home ( Pennsylvania)...from some state out west...and he was running out of gas...So, ME like the only friend he has.....I sent him so money to drive home.Well he promised to pay me when he got home.. he never did !! I`m out like 100 bucks.....
