Thank you very much for your answers, I know the Native Americans had no writing systems but I wondered if there were poems passed down orally which were attributed to one person, a chief perhaps.

I regret that I do not have any specifics for your inquiry. I do have several books on Native American Wisdom. Because of their beliefs and the way the American Indian spoke, I think of poetry just reading what they said.

"Sell a country! Why not sell the air, the great sea, as well as the earth!" - Tecumseh, Shawnee

"We are like birds with a broken wing. My heart is cold within me. My eyes are growing dim - I am old."
Chief Plenty Coups, Crow

"We do not want churches because they will teach us to quarrel about God........." - Chief Joseph, Nez Perce

Just some examples I thought may support my opinion. Take care.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the Cherokee had a written language. As far as poets, I know of none but if you contact the Indian Council in Oklahoma. I have not kept up on my family's history.

Songs were probably the closest since they were an "oral history" type of people with no writing.
