I come from the North East. You may have noticed that we have one or two unique phrases. However, if you come from the North East, you grow up considering these phrases to be normal and universal.

Fit as a flea is one of them, a flea is more fit than a fiddle because it can jump many times its own length. I have yet to see a fiddle achieve a similar feat.
