The brake light is not just for your hand brake. It also signals problems with the braking system in your vehicle. Does it come on when you are using the brakes? It could be something as simple a low brake fluid, or it could be a leak in your system.

Have your brakes inspected by a qualified mechanic ASAP. The light is warning you that something is wrong. Without looking at the car, I could not tell you what it is, but brakes are one of those things you really want to have working correctly!!

I had this problem on my car recently. one of the bolts on my rear brake caliper was loose so even tho my brakes weren't coming on the bolt was moving and hitting the micro switch that turns the light on. I left it ages before getting a garage to look at it, by then my brakes hadn't been working properly for ages and my pads and discs had rusted so best get it looked at asap, you might get away with just a new caliper if its the same problem as I had.
