Everyone's insomnia problems are different, as are our bodies. For that reason, a natural remedy that works for one person may not help another much at all. Here are some things you might try:

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body when we are in a dark, quiet place preparing for sleep. Different things can interfere with melatonin production: aging, sleeping with a nightlight, too much TV or computer right before bed, etc. You can buy melatonin in capsules or chewable wafers. Start with a low dose, like 1 or 2 mg. then add more if needed.

Many people find Valerian root capsules help them relax and get to sleep. Typical dose is 2-500mg capsules 1/2 hour to 45 minutes before bed. Take more if you are a very large person (over 150). Safe and non-habit-forming but allow yourself 8 hours to sleep.

Herbs, Etc., a company out of Santa Fe, NM, makes a liquid extract of several herbs that work synergistically. It's a sort of "shot-gun" approach, using things that help for different insomnia causes and I've heard several good reports on it. It's called "Deep Sleep" and here's a link to read about it: http://www.herbsetc.com/Shopping/d/deep_sleep.htm

I like to drink Celestial Seasonings "Sleepy Time" herbal tea. It is relaxing, and made from camomile flowers. You might eat a light carbohydrate meal several hours before bed. Pasta is great and will make you sleepy.

You can purchase lavendar and/or valerian essence at an herb store and dilute it in water to help you relax. Hot baths with candles are also a nice thing to do for yourself.

Exercise during the day is also good, but not before bed. Reading a good book will help you unwind. If you have something on your mind, write it down so you can release it from your mind. Make sure your bedroom is dark enough so that it is conducive to sleep.

If you have tried everything and that does not work, do seek medical attention.

Hope this helps.

Napqueen suggested melatonin, which is the pigment found in human skin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, it is a natural substance, and yes, it can help you sleep. what it actually does is help "reset" your internal clock, allowing you to sleep better. I don't know if this is something that you would take, due to your beliefs. I used to have the same problem - all of my life, in fact, until I began working a job from 3pm to 11pm. After work, I'd go out & hang out, and often wouldn't go to bed until 8am or so. The point is, I was truely tired when I went to bed, so I had no trouble falling & then staying asleep. I don't know if you have the luxury of rearranging your schedule, but trying to reach a state of true exhaustion before trying to sleep may work. Also, develop a "bed time routine" and stick to it.

you don't need meds. Try yoga or meditation. It takes a while to trian yourself to relax. I do this becuse my mind thinks to much at night!
Lay on the floor, back down, palms at your side facing up. Just relaxed. Then focus on your breathing, in your nose to your stomache then exhale through your nose. When you are used to the breathing, pretend you are climbing onto a cloud and floating along. Just relaxed. You will feel your body getting heavy, this is good. then imagine yourself getting off the cloud. when you try to get up it will be difficult. You will sleep fine as long as you don't move too much or think too much.
A bed is too lumpy, unless you have a firm matress and move the pillows and blankets, do this on the floor.

I agree with Janet s deep sleep is a great natural aid to induce a relaxed mind. they also make deep health that is many kinds of mushrooms. B-vitamins will help repair any nerve damage that may have occurred as a result of excessive stress. some foods that entice serotonin are turkey, oat meal, walnuts, hard boiled eggs,. and warm milk or chamomile tea with honey.A warm shower to help you relax and dare I say it sex. Personally I take a collagen amino acid elixir called AminoSculpt and it works wonders. Your OTC drugs use dyphenhydromine and many people including myself have very adverse reactions with it. Especially if any alcohol is included. pleasant dreams.

Sleep has mainly to do with you exicted mind . specially in your case. Eating heavy meals or drugs for sleep will adversely affect your digestive system and brian system respectively.

when you feel to sleep take hot water bath and lye down in tub for 10-15 minutes.

then relax in your bed close eyes and do nothing . sleep will autmatically follow. unless you start your mind thoughts and imagination, sleep is sure to come. still you may try one more. before sleeping if you feel that sleep will not come. go for swim if you have pool in your house. swimming will make you so tired that sleep will surely come.

To handle the digestive issues, take a good multi enzyme. you might have to try different ones to see which one works best for you.

Also chew a couple DGL tablets. They also help to prevent acid reflux.
