After successfully training dolphins to do 'tricks', the killer whale which is not a whale but a close relative of the dolphin, it was realised that they could be trained too. Different killer whale communities from different parts of the world eat different diets, from large sealions and yes sharks, even proper whales all the way down to sardine eating killer whales from the Norwegian Fjords, so selecting the sardine eating types the trainers felt safe to teach them tricks.

And who risked training the first wolf, who evolved into "man's best friend?" Killer whales (orca) can't be completely trained. Recently, an orca turned on its keeper and killed him. Whales are extremely intelligent and surprisingly, most of them like people. Considering what humans have done to whales in the past, this is more than surprising, it's amazing.

Humans figured this out after the Whales taught us their intellectual abilities. Another example of Nature winning the "Battle of the Brains".
With intelligence comes compassion. Whales kill sharks for food like "some" deer hunters kill a deer. Just because they kill for food, does not mean they kill people. Hope you see what I say?

The Killer Whale (Orca) is a species of dolphin and not a whale. Other species of dolphins are trained, this one is just bigger.

Catch one stick it in a pool and bore it into doing tricks for fish. Better we ask when did humans finally figure out that we were bugging the hell out of a creature with the same mental capacity of ourselves.
