It depends on preferences. But BC is better for recreation, as it has access to a lot more variety of terrain. More mountains, a milder winter and a coastline really opens up for a variety of extra recreation activities, from more downhill ski hills to choose from, great golf courses, to boating and fishing options. I live on Vancouver Island, and all those Albertans vacationing here all summer long to fish can't be wrong. Plus with a million more people in BC sounds like it would open up more variety too. That is if more people, means more demand thus more recreation. The one plus I assume is Alberta has had cash to inject into public recreational infrastructure. I don't know to what degree they have. On that side, BC is injecting a lot into 2010 Olympic Facilities. Alberta has those type of facilities in place now, but over the next few years, BC's stuff will be brand new, and Alberta's will be 25 years old.

Standard of living is tough. Both BC and Alberta economies are booming. Alberta is booming a bit more. But measuring standard of living I would look to those who aren't doing well during the boom. With increased prices because of the boom and you aren't employed, you'd be really stuck. But Alberta's is ranked first in Canada.

Politics is by preference too. Alberta is considered more right wing, and BC is considered to be more left wing in comparison to the Canadian norms. However, Alberta votes the same way decade after decade. Same provincial governments, same federal MP's. If you disagree with that majority, you are doomed to think your vote doesn't count and change is impossible. BC however, swings its vote and changes frequently. They get a polarization in Provincial governments, and the swing from extremes isn't always good. But it at least shows democracy in action.

Overall I pick BC.

BC is better in terms of recreation. AB is better in terms of standard of living. Both are equally good in terms of politics.
