I'd like to recommend Stella Rimington's "At Risk", a paperback published by Hutchinson, which is her first novel based on her experience as an MI5 official who later held the position as Director-General of MI5, being the first lady holding such the position there. Now she's retired and written an autobiography, "Open Secret", a paperback published by Arrow Books.
Please visit the web site below to read her biography and work there.

I suggest the book series based on the tv show "Alias." There are 25 books in total. You can view all of the covers ( except for the last one) here:
http://alias-media.com/modules.php?name=Alias_Books
The links on that page take you to a page where you can buy the books at Amazon.

Even if you haven't watched "Alias" you would like these books.

The first 12 books of the series are prequels (they take place before the 1st episode of "Alias.")
1. Recruited
2. A Secret Life
3. Disappeared
4. Sister Spy
5. The Pursuit/A Michael Vaughn novel
6. Close Quarters/A Michael Vaughn novel
7. Father Figure
8. Free Fall
9. Infiltration
10. Vanishing Act
11. Skin Deep
12. Shadowed

The second half of the book series takes place during the same time frame as the tv show.
13 Two of A Kind?
14. Faina
15. Collateral Damage
16. Replaced
17. The Road Not Taken
18. Vigilance
19. Strategic Reserve
20. Once Lost
21. Namesakes
22. Old Friends
23. The Ghost
24. Mind Games
25. A Touch Of Death

Agree with the poster who suggested John Le Carre. As to dated I can assure you the Russians and Chinese are still upto their tricks in a very Cold War vein. Plus Le Carre has accidentally acted as an unofficial historian for the grand struggles of power and influence that shaped the 20 th Century espionage.

Try the books by John Le Carre, I believe he used to work for M16.

most of Frederick Forsyth (Jackal) or any from Robert Lundlum (Bourne).
Really amazing and modern, even those dated from Cold War.
