No, but it's not a bad thing to have, along with as much ID as you have. You never know what they're going to ask for. I'm assuming you're going from America to Canada, in which case getting back into America is usally the hard part. I just came back and had no trouble at all, but I have a passport. I think by next January everyone will need a passport to get into Canada, and if you have a passport then you don't really need any other ID.

If you are American, you don't need a birth certificate if you have a passport. But if you don't have a passport and crossing by land, you need to prove your identity and you citizenship. (A passport proves both.) Identity is proved by government issued photo Identification. But a drivers license could be issued to anyone, you don't have to be a citizen to get one. Citizenship is by a birth certificate. There are some other options but they are for people who immigrated to the country.
Reality is, some people might get buy without it. But they can deny you entry. I'm a Canadian. The last time I presented a drivers license coming home, they asked for my birth certificate. But I usually just use my passport.

No, but you'll need a valid photo ID, like a driver's liscence or military ID. Honestly, it's not getting into Canada that's the hard part... it's trying to get back into the US. I actually had a harder time trying to get back home as an American born citizen than I did getting into Canada as a tourist. At one point I was actually afraid they weren't going to let me back in. I have no idea how illegal immigrants do it.

Usually no but I just got back from driving through and one of the customs guys actually told me I did. I'd do it just in case.
Added: I was going in when he told me, from Michigan. Not trying to come out.

You need it to go to the US. (because, you will want to return)
otherwise the US border will not allow you in - for they do not know who you are, so it is wize to carry as much ID as you possibly can.
