Well I thought it would be an easy search for an answer.
Ive always wondered the same thing, and just assumed it was an indian word. Heres what I was able to dig up:

“Monongahela” reportedly came from one of several interpretations or spellings of one or more American Indian (presumably Delaware) words such as “Mehmannauwinggelan”, “Menaungehilla”, or “Meh-non-ge-heh-lal” .

The most commonly quoted meaning appears to be “the river of falling banks.”

The Mon Valley is actually south of Pittsburgh, and represents a lot of ethnic communities which grew up around the steel mills (e.g. Donora, Monesson, California, Monongahela). The Monongahela River actually begins in West Virginia (Fairmont) and flows north (one of the few rivers in the world that does).
