Depending on how heavy your wife (is she really or has she just put on a few/less than 5 pounds?), you might want to put your request diplomatically. Don't say "Go on a diet", you might hurt her feelings. Better comment on her changed figure (in a nice way, please) and ask her if she feels good that way or if she'd rather change her figure back to how it used to be.

If she feels good the way she is, let her be happy and just get used to it.

Women are very sensitive about their weight. I would tred carefully, and perhaps talk with her Doctor and have him/her tell your wife that for health reasons she should lose weight. You can of course, come right out ant tell her "your should go on a diet", especially if you like frozen TV dinners. served from that point on.

It might help if you pitch it to her differently, say honey, I think WE need to exercise more....together. That way you are spending quality time together and exercising at the same time! (I know how you feel. My boyfriend has packed on the pounds.)
