I myself am an organic/natural eater. I am not a vegetarian and I wouldn't want to feed a carnivore just veggies either. I am a little extreme sometimes. I eat meat but only meat I raise. I am against hormones, chemicals and preservatives, fast foods, homogenized milk, anything in a box or can. I also feed my pets that way. I feed a product called Flint River which is all holistic and mostly organic. They don't add any chemicals, preservatives, or dyes. They don't use dead, diseased and dying animals like the commercial grade pet food. They have food with chicken and lamb but also make a Fish and Potato for dogs a dry food, it's awesome. There cat food has a wide variety too. They also test for Melamine during processing. That was the problem with all of those other foods recalled, the melamine was killing pets. The recall is still going on and I am very happy to be feeding this product. If you want to check it out www.frrco.com/122135. If fish is on your okay list for your pet you can feed this product.

If your pets are carnivores i.e. have guts and dentition optimised to rip and chew flesh and crush bones you feed them meat and if they can take it bones. Some reptiles will need to take their food whole either live or more acceptably a warmed fresh carcass (pet shops sell these things for snakes and the like)
For herbivores one should research carefully the diet needed and again a decent pet shop should be able to advise.
Omnivores will need a balanced meat and vegetable protein diet and again ye olde pet shoppe will help you design a diet to keep your pet thriving.
My only comment would be that one should pick a pet that suits your lifestyle and convictions, do not inflict your dietary values on a poor animal. The poor thing did not ask to be owned by a human with 'issues'.

It depends on the pet. Dogs can eat a lot of vegetables because they're omnivorous to a certain degree (wild ancestors of them ate some vegetation) but they still need meat to get a balanced diet.

Cats HAVE to have a meat diet, they're definately carnivores.

Horses, goats, sheep & cows--vegetation only.

Rodents--some will eat some meat (yes, squirrels will fight over a slice of peperoni pizza and will eat some eggs out of bird nests), like mice and rats if they come across, say, the leftovers of someone's baked chicken. But mostly they eat seeds and other vegetation.

Snakes are carnivores, most definately. So are most lizards and nearly all birds to some degree (bugs are 'meat').

So it depends.

Although I am a strict vegetarian, that is my choice and I do not impose my choices on anyone. That goes for my animals, they cannot say what they want to eat, so I give them a varied diet which includes meat and fish. Although I would prefer them not to because the reason I am vegetarian is because I do not believe it is necessary in this day and age when there are so many other options to eat anything that has had a face, I feel by being a vegetarian myself, I am helping in my own small way so do not feel guilty about letting my animals continue with their normal diet.

Yes, they make vegan cat and dog food. Its irresponsible to feed your cat vegan food only, however dogs can thrive well on a vegan diet. And mikey up there is incorrect and I guess basing that on opinion, as many vegans have many animal companions..I have cats, whom I adore. And ya I get them all fixed. It truly is crueler in the long run to not fix your pet. There is no guise there. But thats a whole othet topic.. :)

I know, I know... it's a hole in my ethics... but I love my cat, and I've had him since before I was a vegetarian, so I suppose that's better than if I got a cat afterwards. I will look after him now until he passes away. Possibly my next pet will also be vegetarian, a rabbit, or a cow or a sheep perhaps? Maybe a little bird that eats grain?

I believe Morrissey once had a cat which he fed on a strict vegan diet - however this seems pointless as I'm sure it still went out and hunted it's own meat.

Meat based dog food, cooked meat, some raw meat, meat meat meat! You're right though, dogs are neither vegan nor vegetarian, although mine do enjoy fresh raw veg and some fruit.

Just because you are a vegetarian it doesn't mean your pets will be too. They will want meat and you should feed them just that. If you really cannot, find food with no meat in it.
