Hi, somehow my pc got some strange problems like:
When i double click on a " File, folder, avi file " it opens the file, but when i double click on a software icon on my desktop like Internet explorer, photoshop, etc..., it doens't open anymore by double clicking "software icons", but it works on files. But i discover a way to open my software icon, by left clicking the mouse and pressing "open", then it opens the software.

And somehow my Oficce 2007, excel, words, won't open even with both techniques. My Internet Explorer lost some tools like the block where you put the www.???.com, i went to "tools" in my "IE" and i check all the tool boxes, but there was no visible problems with my tool box.
But everytime when i open the IE, the www.???.com box just wasn't there anymore...
How can i reinstall my IE?

All this problems came at the same time. What can i do to solve all this problem?

Thanks,,,

I used the SFC in safe mode but after i enter the SFC /scannow and pressed confirm.
nothing happened...why?

Another question will be...if i use system restore, will all the downloaded files be gone? And can i go back to before system restore?

First update and scan your computer with your security products such as antivirus and antispyware applications. If you computer comes up clean after running your resident security products, you may want to consider running a System File Checker (SFC). This can be run in Safe Mode should you prefer. To get into Safe Mode either hold down or tap the F8 key repeatedly while the computer is starting up. To run SFC, close all applications such as Office, Messenger, Email, etc, and go to:

- Start
- Run
- Type in sfc /scannow (include the space before the " / ")

What SFC does is that it attempts to fix or replace critical operating system files. Sometimes this can be done without the installation disk, however it may prompt you for the appropriate operating system installation disk. If that is the case, then you know that you definitely have file corruption or something missing. Insert the disk if prompted. Also you should run SFC using the Administrator account.

If you have the Vista operating system, the steps are a bit different due to the UAC. See the link below.

Don't surf, play games or do anything while SFC runs. After it is completed, reboot your computer.

One of the major culprits in missing or corrupt operating system files is running a registry cleaner or optimizer. They can flag important shared files for deletion or cleanup. Another cause is malware.

NOTE: Before running any registry cleaner or editing the registry, always ensure you back it up first. If the registry cleaner you are using doesn't have that function, you can do it manually. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

Two separate problems:

1) File associations. Double click on Folder Options via Control Panel and click on the view Types tab. Scroll down the list and find your file extension. Change the program that opens the file type.

2) Internet Explorer address bar. Click on View and then Tool Bars and check each item you want.

For the icons not working, start by defragging, it's one of the options on your start menu under programs-accessories-system tools. It'll probably take all night though.

As far as the missing address bar, it's probably there, you just dragged it somewhere where it's offscreen or too small to see(right click on an empty space in the tool bar and make sure there's a check next to the address bar option on the menu). Look for those little vertical lines that separate your tools on the bar and drag them around to see what you can find. Once it's back to normal, right click and choose "lock toolbars"

You need to do a system restore. This allows you to restore your computer back to its last known good configuration.
To do this boot up your computer and wait until its completely done loading before you continue. Maybe walk away and eat a burger or something.
Click on start go to all programs, accessories, system tools, select system restore.
The wizard will guide you through this process. It's easy and very effective.

If your PC is slowing down, or acting strangely, it's probably infected with malware. Use the link below to learn more about "malware".

Then, you need to install:

ONE Anti-virus (delete ALL others, I use AVG free),
http://www.free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/frt/0?prd=aff

ONE XP Firewall (Zone Alarm),
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?dc=78lts&ctry=CA&lang=en

(Vista version):

http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/promotions/vista/index5.html

AND these 5 Anti-Spyware tools:

Windows Defender
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Ad-Aware 2007
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Spyware Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloads.html

cCleaner (technically, not anti-spyware, but very useful)
http://www,ccleaner.com

I use all regularly. Download them, install them and learn how to use them (HINT: Use the Help TAB). (Need more help? Re-post.)

TIP: The apps above can only clean up so much.

As a last resort: Back up all personal data from your PC (copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive). Then, do a Windows "Clean Install", for further instructions, go to: http://www.theeldergeek.com

Note: You must use your Recovery disks, if included with your PC, to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP. The Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual FIRST.

Final TIP: Use Firefox instead of IE, it's only good for Windows Updates.
