Take and old washcloth and soak it in water with dish washing detergent dissolved in it and then lightly wring it out. Hang the damp cloth on the wall with thumbtacks so that it is on top of the glue area and leave it there for about 30 minutes. After the time has past use the cloth to scrub the glue off the wall. The cloth should hold the detergent against the glue for the 30 minutes and the rough surface of the washcloth will help in the removal of the glue. Repeat for next washcloth sized area. You may be fighting an adhesive that was used because the high humidity was causing the paper to peel off, if may be something like rubber cement...? If the washcloth doesn't work you might need to use a solvent, start with rubbing alcohol and then move on the paint thinner. It won't take much to determine if the solvent is removing the glue. Keep the window open since the solvents can make a great stink. Good luck.

I used Dawn (or other dishsoap) and a plastic dobby. It took off the paste and cleaned the walls all at the same time. As long as you don't go overboard, you won't even have to rinse. I had a spray bottle with hot water that I just added a few drops of soap to, sprayed the wall and scrubbed. Took about an hour to do the entire room!
