Sounds like the charging jack is damaged. You will need to take it in and have it repaired or replaced.

obtain a DC volt meter. take the battery out of the PC, and look at the caseing. some ware there, there is a stamp of sorts, or it's molded into the caseing, that tells how many volts the battery is.
Put the battery back in to the PC and charge it for a coupple of hours or longer if you want. Take the battery back out, and take a voltage reading. If nothing is cinclusive, charge the battery for at laest 8 hours more.

aalso a possability of sloppy connections, or damage from a fall.

take battery out again, and take a voltage reading. If the readings you are getting are not close to right on, ttake the , and go search out a new one, because the one you have now, is dying with no hope of recovery.

By the way, the charger that came with the PC, are usually designed to operate your PC, with out the battery.

I had the same problem with my emachine laptop. I had the charger checked and it was not that, so I didn't spend the $80 to buy a new one. I wiggled the da*** thing and did everything as you said. Then I was told that the plug itself needed to be re-done (sordered?) inside the machine and that it would cost anywhere from $100 - $200. I also understand that this is a problem with all emachines. I elected to buy another laptop. There is no easy fix and I am sure it is not your battery.

Good luck!

Like others have said, the power jack on the laptop itself it probably worn down.

Also, depending on how old the laptop is, you may need a new battery. Laptop batteries tend to start to die after about a year, and then within 3/4 years they could be completely dead.

It sounds like a faulty power jack. You could have it replaced. http://www.laptopjacks.com/ You could do it yourself, but it's not an easy task: http://defectivekit.com/2007/02/15/guide-to-fixing-a-laptop-power-jack-a-do-it-yourselfer/ or you can have it serviced for $100+ price. http://www.repairpowerjack.com/ or http://www.714laptop.com/laptop-DC-Jack-repair.htm
