i had the same problem, try updating the video card driver
if you open up Appearance and themes in Control Panel, and click on change the screen resolution and than change it that way
if that doesn't work, click on the advanced button in the resolution tab, and there is a tab for the card, that should help, if not, contact your PCs manufacturer

You didn't re-install the motherboard drivers and video drivers.

Note: You must use your Recovery disks, if included with your PC, to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP. The Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual FIRST.

In your case, it's already too late!

I suggest you check and see if your video card drivers are compatible with Ubuntu. This can prevent you from making changes to the display settings.

It seems that after reinstallation you didn't also install the video card driver. Look it up on your computer's manufacturer's website.

It is most likely your video card driver. Try updating it and see if that helps.
