I have found the absolute best way to deal with spiders. First, I have spider traps from the hardware store. They are sticky and once any thing, including other insects, walk over them, they stick and soon die. I put them under furniture where they cannot be reached by a child or pet. They are completely safe--no toxins. Second, I have a bug sucker--a little vacuum with a long nose. I use this for spiders that I see. They are electrocuted. You then dump them out in the toilet. The bug sucker is good because you don't have to get too close, you can reach high on the wall with it and there is no mark on the wall from the dead spider. These techniques work well with other insects too. Don't use poisons. They don't work very well anyway.

I find that bug-bombing your abode in the spring and fall really helps control pests. We have a basement, so after shutting off pilot lights on furnace and water heater, we place 2 bug bombs down there. We leave the house for a few hours, and couple days later, sweep up the pests! I was afraid this would chase them upstairs, but not the case. No spiders, etc. anywhere, and we live on a farm. In an apt., put all your dishes into cupboards, along with food items. Check label on bug bomb for particulars on washing down table, counters, etc. afterwards. Good luck; I Hate spiders or anything else that doesn't belong in my house!

If you don't call a pest control company to schedule reg appointments or these chemicals are too harsh for you or your animals, do something more natural. I use a spray bottle with water and about a few drops to a teaspoon of dish detergent without bleach mixed. Just need it soapy enough to feel it. Spray it on their webs and them and they will disappear for a long while. A mist and not a stream of water works best. If you have it too soapy, remember to rinse your walls. Kill the spiders with a broom if you can and spray area where the live most!:>)
