Does music theory limit creativity?

I have been making beats for about 4 years without any background in music theory. During this period, I have thought about learning music theory several times but I always have had the worry that it may hinder or affect my creativity. I somehow have this idea that my music will be more "natural" and "authentic" if I construct my melodies by ear. I am afraid that learning the rules and formalities of music will "taint" my music that I currently have been making. Just so you know, my intentions are to become a music producer. So...would music theory really help improve the music that I am working on now? and... Would it open doors or would it shut them?

Not only does knowledge of music theory not hinder creativity, it enhances it. In the classroom, theory provides a structured learning environment for the student. On the field, the rules of theory are written to be broken in letter and kept in spirit but not ignored. I tried that once and the results were disastrous. I have never done that since.

No! On the contrary, it encourages creativity. While you don't have to know music theory to be creative, it is just one tool in a musician's repertoire, and it can very definitely be a help to creativity for some people. I didn't take very much because I didn't study music in a school, but with a private teacher, and I REALLY wish I knew more.

no because after a while every musician get a feel of music theory without even realizing it. if you learn music theory youll just be able to look at your instrument and it already makes sense. also you can get a feel for new beats and harmonies. and even more when you get together with musicians youll be able to tell them what key your in and what timing its in (4/4 or 6/8 and whatnot). ITS GREAT!!
